STILLWATER SMALLSCALES A CHALLENGE
Stillwater yellowfish anywhere in South Africa present their own challenges, but when it all comes together the rewards are more than satisfying and over the years we have fished many of the local impoundments that were built for various reasons across some of the rivers that contain the elusive Smallscale Yellowfish. Smallscale yellowfish have adapted well in many of dams and we have managed to find an exceptional dam that has clear waters allowing the angler to sight cast dry flies to these strong, wary but willing smallscales. Located within 3 hours drive from Gauteng
One has to stay low and out of sight, use light leaders with small dry flies or dry dropper combinations, presenting your flies to fish that are super wary. Sometimes they will test your nerves not to strike, when they first try to drown your presentation, before committing to it. Then when you do manage to set the hook on a decent fish, fight it on a light 5x or less tippet will test your skills to the limit.
On other days they will become super aggressive and smash large streamers this is exciting stuff when a big yellow keys in on your fly and rushes it down, the takes are often smashing and if you are not ready for it they will leave you standing surprised.
This Stillwater also has some exceptional Largemouth Bass and it also plays host to big carp that can often be found rooting in the shallows, not to mention a healthy catfish population.
